Under limited supervision of a veterinarian, assists with the management and health maintenance of laboratory animals used in a research and teaching environment. Provides advanced technical support and assistance in the performance of laboratory, clinical and surgical procedures, directly related to the care and use of animals used in a research and teaching environment. This position is considered essential personnel for laboratory animal care.
Job Responsibility:
Under limited supervision of a veterinarian, assists with the management and health maintenance of laboratory animals used in a research and teaching environment
Provides advanced technical support and assistance in the performance of laboratory, clinical and surgical procedures, directly related to the care and use of animals used in a research and teaching environment
Acts independently and with sound judgment to triage new clinical cases for appropriate veterinary care
Performs minor surgical procedures as directed
Provides quality assurance control to the maintenance of supplies, rooms, and equipment used for veterinary care and treatment of animals
Contacts vendors for repairs, pricing, and product availability at the direction of the veterinarians
Develops Veterinary Care related Standard Operating Procedures as applicable
Mentors Veterinary Assistants in the field of laboratory animal medicine and care
Demonstrates a willingness to work across institutional divisions
Requirements:
Associate's degree in Veterinary Medical Technology
Three years' experience in an animal research facility or veterinarian office
Registered Veterinary Technician by Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) and state exam
Advanced knowledge of surgical experience with anesthetic equipment, monitoring equipment, radiographic equipment, and various computer programs/ data entry
Advanced knowledge of animal disease, and the ability to recognize pain, discomfort, illness or injury in animals
Advanced knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, medical techniques, and standard clinical procedures
Mathematics skills to perform drug dose calculations and temperature conversions
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to perform documentation and record keeping complying with SOPs and regulations
Ability to utilize computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, email, training modules)
Ability to work independently
Good time-management skills
Good interpersonal/ human relations skills
