The registered nurse in the radiation oncology department is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing radiation treatment. This position will assess patient needs, assist in treatments, monitor patient responses, and provide education and support throughout the treatment process.
Job Responsibility
Conduct initial assessments of patients undergoing radiation treatments, obtaining health histories, performing physical examinations, and assessing treatment-related symptoms and side effects.
Collaborate with radiation oncologists and other healthcare providers to carry out individualized treatment plans and interventions based on patient needs and treatment goals.
Administers medications as directed by the physician.
Monitor patient responses to radiation therapy, assessing for treatment-related adverse effects, change in symptoms, and signs of radiation toxicity.
Provide patient education and counseling regarding radiation therapy procedures, potential side effects, and strategies for managing symptoms and promoting comfort and well-being.
Document all aspects of patient care accurately and timely in electronic medical records (EMR) systems, including treatment plans, nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety initiatives to enhance the quality and safety of radiation oncology care.
Maintain competency in radiation safety practices, including proper handling and disposal of radioactive materials, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards and accreditation requirements.

Requirements
Current BLS and Nursing License
Computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Office applications
Mathematical skills- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Interpersonal skills – Must be able to communicate effectively with multiple people on a daily basis including but not limited to physicians, hospital personnel, patients etc.
Decision making and reasoning ability- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with multiple variables in situation where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Bachelor’s degree (B.S.N.) from 4- year college or university
