The Regional Director of Recreation provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of recreation and life enrichment programs across all communities. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously enhancing innovative, person-centered programming that enriches residents’ daily lives and supports their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive well-being. Collaborating closely with Executive Directors and Directors of Recreation, the Regional Director of Recreation ensures that all programs are responsive to the diverse needs, preferences, and abilities of residents, including those requiring assisted living or memory care support. The role emphasizes fostering meaningful engagement, promoting independence, and creating inclusive environments where residents can build connections and maintain a strong sense of purpose and belonging. Through strong leadership, data-driven decision-making, and a commitment to continuous improvement, the Regional Director of Recreation ensures consistent, high-quality resident experiences across all communities while aligning with organizational goals, values, and growth strategies.

Job Responsibility

  • Develop and implement a regional recreation strategy aligned with organizational mission and resident needs
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to Directors of Recreation and team members across multiple communities
  • Foster a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and resident-centered care
  • Ensure each community offers diverse, high-quality recreational programs (social, physical, cultural, cognitive)
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness through resident feedback and participation metrics
  • Introduce new initiatives based on trends, best practices, and resident interests
  • Lead program creation and implementation for memory care residents
  • Recruit, train, and evaluate recreation teams across all communities
  • Conduct regular site visits to support teams and ensure program quality
  • Identify professional development opportunities and provide ongoing coaching
  • Ensure all programs meet provincial regulations, safety standards, and accreditation requirements
  • Maintain proper documentation, policies, and procedures across communities
  • Support audits and inspections as needed
  • Promote resident engagement, choice, and independence
  • Collaborate with care teams to tailor programs to varying levels of ability and cognitive function
  • Address resident and family feedback promptly and effectively
  • Collaborate closely with Executive Directors, Health & Wellness teams, and other departments

Requirements

  • Diploma or degree in Recreation Therapy, Gerontology, Leisure Studies, or related field
  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in recreation programming, preferably in senior living or healthcare
  • 2–3 years of leadership experience overseeing multiple sites or teams
  • Knowledge of aging, dementia care, and resident-centered programming ie Welbi
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with relevant provincial regulations (e.g., retirement home standards in Ontario)
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and be able to travel within Ontario
