The Radiation Therapist is responsible for delivering radiation therapy treatments to cancer patients. Under the direction of radiation oncologists, they administer accurate and precise doses of radiation.
Job Responsibility
Prepare treatment rooms and equipment for radiation therapy sessions, ensuring proper setup and calibration of devices
Position patients on treatment tables and immobilize them using positioning devices to ensure accurate delivery of radiation
Operate linear accelerators and other radiation therapy equipment to administer prescribed doses of radiation to targeted areas of the body
Monitor patients during treatment sessions, observing for any adverse reactions and providing reassurance and support as needed
Collaborate with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and dosimetrists to develop and implement patient treatment plans based on prescribed doses and treatment techniques
Maintain accurate record of treatment parameters, patient positioning, and radiation doses administered, adhering to departmental protocols and regulatory requirements
Assist with patient education and counseling, explaining treatment procedures, potential side effects, and safety precautions
Ensure compliance with radiation safety protocols and quality assurance standards, including daily equipment checks, calibration procedures, and radiation safety measures
Participate in departmental quality improvement activities, contributing to the development and implementation of best practices and process enhancements
Provide support and assistance to patients and their families, addressing questions, concerns, and providing emotional support throughout the treatment process
Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including nurses, and support staff, to coordinate patient care and ensure continuity of care

Requirements
Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school
Bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy or a related field required
Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy
State licensure and certification as required by regulatory agencies
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact compassionately with patients and their families
Strong technical skills and proficiency in operating radiation therapy equipment
Commitment to maintain the highest standards of patient safety, quality, and professionalism
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced clinical environment
