ATI’s Research & Development Engineering Intern Program is designed for graduate students who have a passion for innovation and a desire to apply their expertise to meaningful, real-world challenges. Interns are welcomed as colleagues and work alongside experienced professionals, contributing to projects that advance ATI’s leadership in specialty materials and solutions. Based at ATI’s Monroe, NC facility, this program provides a unique opportunity to engage in applied research and development in advanced titanium and nickel-based alloys. Participants gain hands-on experience in ATI’s fast-paced R&D environment while applying advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to support ATI’s mission of delivering highly engineered products for critical applications.
Job Responsibility:
Develop and implement ML/AI models for image detection and classification of metallurgical microstructures and defects
Investigate and apply multimodal AI methods to integrate image, sensor, and process data
Design and maintain data pipelines for preprocessing, augmentation, and analysis
Collaborate with ATI engineers and researchers to translate computational results into practical insights
Document results and contribute to internal reports, presentations, and technical reviews
Requirements:
Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field
Strong knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision
Proficiency in Python and at least one major ML framework (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)
Familiarity with multimodal AI and transformer-based models
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Nice to have:
Research experience applying ML/AI methods to image detection or vision-language tasks
Exposure to materials science concepts such as microstructure and alloy development (beneficial but not required)
Experience with large datasets and cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
Strong technical writing and presentation skills
What we offer:
Exposure to challenging, real-world research and development projects
Mentorship from ATI’s R&D experts and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
A supportive environment that encourages innovation, learning, and professional growth
Competitive compensation for the duration of the internship
