Lead the development of Control, Electrical and Instrumentation engineering capability to support a wide range of R&D projects. Build and strengthen a network of specialist CE&I engineering suppliers to enhance internal expertise, and take responsibility for resolving complex technical challenges to optimise CE&I design for critical or novel plant equipment and systems. Shape Urenco R&D’s approach to CE&I design and regulatory compliance, ensuring high standards across all activities. Work closely with the Project Delivery team to define and implement design and engineering initiatives that align with each project’s stage of development and support the smooth transfer of R&D projects to capital projects.
Job Responsibility:
Ensure inherent safety is built into all CE&I design solutions
Consider the full spectrum of engineering, operating, process and maintenance conditions during design
Address critical factors such as technician behaviour and human factors, common mode failure and unrevealed failure
Ensure all documents are correctly marked, stored and managed in line with security and export control requirements
Deliver engineering designs that fully comply with all relevant legislation and standards
Promote a strong sense of teamwork that drives CE&I engineering excellence and supports a collaborative approach to design and problem solving
Offer coaching, mentoring and technical guidance to engineers across R&D and the wider organisation
Manage and lead projects within the team portfolio
Provide expert capability as an experienced CE&I engineer
Lead and support change management initiatives across the CE&I discipline
Contribute specialist input to process safety activities within R&D projects
Support incident investigations for pilot plant operations and long‑term issues
Improve the delivery of CE&I engineering by ensuring that design bases are compliant, detailed designs are accurate, and implementation scope is clearly defined and communicated
Drive continuous improvement in CE&I engineering standards and systems to increase efficiency, enhance design traceability and support high‑quality project outcomes
Requirements:
Chartered CE&I Engineer with substantial design, operational and ideally commissioning experience, typically gained over a minimum of ten years
Degree or equivalent engineering qualification in CE&I Engineering (or similar), supported by at least ten years of CE&I engineering experience
Experience within a chemical or nuclear environment
Strong background working in highly regulated environments, including experience on top tier COMAH sites or nuclear facilities
Broad knowledge of CE&I technologies, systems and equipment
Extensive experience working within multi‑discipline engineering teams, with a clear understanding of the roles and contributions of each discipline
Ability to lead small teams and manage projects
