Job Responsibility:
Wick is located within the Highland Council area in Scotland. Therefore, the Children and Families Social Work duties in Wick are carried out by Highland Council Social Work Services, adhering to Scottish legislation and national guidance, such as Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC)
The duties of Children and Families Social Work in Wick typically encompass a wide range of services aimed at promoting the welfare, safety, and development of children and young people
Carrying out enquiries, assessments, and investigations into referrals where a child is at risk of harm, abuse, or neglect
Coordinating multi-agency risk assessments and Child Protection Planning Meetings
Maintaining the Child Protection Register
Applying for legal measures, such as a Child Protection Order, in emergencies
Conducting comprehensive assessments of a child's and family's needs, often using the GIRFEC principles
Developing, managing, and reviewing individual care plans designed to meet the needs of children, young people, and their families
Identifying and managing risks in work with children and families
Discharging the local authority's duty to refer children who may be in need of a Compulsory Supervision Order to the Principal Reporter
Writing statutory reports for the Scottish Children's Reporter Administration (SCRA)
Attending Children's Hearings to present evidence and advocate for the child's best interests
Supervising children on behalf of the local authority to give effect to the decisions of the Children's Hearings
Making recommendations to a Children's Hearing or court about whether a child should be accommodated away from home
Identifying appropriate placements, and assessing and supporting kinship carers and foster carers
Carrying out measures identified in adoption and permanence legislation
Providing support and planning for children leaving care
Providing a Social Work service as the lead professional to children and families, including providing or facilitating access to a wide range of support services
Working to reduce risk and promote wellbeing, aiming for the principle of minimum intervention to support children to remain within their birth family where it is safe to do so
Working in multi-agency forums with police, health, and education services to ensure effective and coordinated support
Ensuring work is carried out in accordance with all relevant Scottish legislation (e.g., the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968, Children (Scotland) Act 1995, Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014) and local Council policies
