Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Property Tax Manager to establish and oversee the in-house property tax function for a large and growing real estate portfolio in Houston, Texas. This position plays a central role within Finance. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in property tax compliance, valuation strategy, and appeals management across a wide range of residential and land assets.

Job Responsibility

  • Direct the full property tax process for a portfolio
  • Administer filings, renditions, payment schedules, and jurisdictional deadlines across Texas counties and additional markets as the portfolio expands
  • Maintain detailed parcel-level tax records and collaborate with accounting teams to support accurate accruals, reconciliations, and timely payments
  • Review assessment notices and valuation changes, identify meaningful shifts in tax exposure, and communicate findings to leadership
  • Lead informal and formal assessment challenges by developing supporting documentation, presenting cases, and managing hearings before appraisal review boards
  • Prioritize annual protest activity by evaluating accounts with the greatest financial impact and aligning strategy to portfolio objectives
  • Oversee arbitration and administrative appeal matters when further action is justified to protect asset values
  • Use market intelligence, comparable transactions, and valuation inputs to strengthen tax appeal arguments and support value management decisions
  • Guide external consultants through a phased transfer of responsibilities to internal ownership while preserving continuity and service quality
  • Assess and implement specialized tools or software that improve large-scale property tax tracking, reporting, and workflow management

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in property tax, local tax, or a closely related corporate tax management role
  • Demonstrated success handling property tax compliance and appeals across large, multi-parcel real estate portfolios
  • Strong working knowledge of assessment procedures, protest timelines, and filing requirements in Texas jurisdictions
  • Experience preparing valuation support using market data, comparable sales, and other relevant appraisal inputs
  • Ability to represent business interests effectively in hearings, negotiations, and other tax dispute settings
  • Proven skill in coordinating with cross-functional stakeholders such as finance, legal, accounting, and operational teams
  • Experience managing third-party advisors or consultants while building internal processes and capabilities
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to manage detailed records across a high-volume asset base
