Job Description:

Lawes Consulting is supporting a top-tier insurer in recruiting a skilled Property & Casualty Underwriter to join their Birmingham office. This role is ideal for someone looking to underwrite a varied book across Property, Liability, Combined, and Construction, working with a mix of national and independent brokers.

Job Responsibility:

Underwrite and manage a portfolio across core commercial classes
Develop and maintain relationships with regional broker partners
Assess risks accurately and deliver profitable underwriting decisions
Contribute to new business growth and retention in line with regional strategy
Provide input into pricing, risk appetite, and broker development initiatives
Collaborate across teams to support operational and financial goals
Underwrite new and renewal cases ranging from £10k GWP to high-value risks
Actively support both new business and existing business
Engage regularly with national and local brokers to build long-term partnerships
Apply a balanced approach to underwriting-combining technical insight with commercial judgement

Requirements:

2-3 years minimum in commercial underwriting, ideally across Property, Liability, and Combined
Experience with UK-based commercial risks and broker distribution
Composite insurer background preferred, though strong MGA or binder-underwriting experience will be considered
Solid understanding of trading with both large national and independent brokers
Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities
Confident communicator with excellent broker-facing skills
Commercial mindset with a focus on underwriting discipline
Proficient in prioritising workloads and managing a varied case pipeline
Technically sound in underwriting construction and combined commercial risks
