Job Description

A growing San Francisco–based real estate company is seeking a contract Property Accountant to support day-to-day accounting operations across a portfolio of properties. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning property-level reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance, and partnering closely with asset management, operations, and property management teams.

Job Responsibility

  • Manage full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of commercial and/or residential properties
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and variance analyses
  • Record and reconcile rent rolls, CAM recoveries, and tenant billings
  • Review, code, and approve property-level invoices and journal entries
  • Perform month-end close activities, including accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank statements, and balance sheet accounts
  • Track and reconcile security deposits, prepaid expenses, and reserves
  • Support annual budgets, forecasts, and operating expense reconciliations
  • Prepare audit support and work directly with external auditors as needed
  • Partner with property managers and asset management to resolve discrepancies and improve reporting processes

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in property accounting or real estate accounting
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and real estate accounting principles
  • Experience with property management/accounting systems such as Yardi, MRI, AppFolio, or similar
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and lookup functions
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Proven ability to manage multiple properties and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
