Job Description

Under general direction of the Director of Facilities Operations and Planning, serves as a senior facilities professional responsible for coordinating and overseeing facilities operations, space planning, infrastructure improvements, maintenance activities, renovations, and construction-related activities supporting Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). Provides advanced facilities management expertise for a diverse portfolio of research, administrative, laboratory, engineering, and specialized operational environments. Serves as a key liaison between Facilities Management, building occupants, campus partners, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies regarding facility operations, maintenance, remodeling, infrastructure improvements, safety, access, and space utilization. Coordinates activities among multiple stakeholders to support safe, efficient, and compliant facilities operations while balancing operational, research, and institutional requirements. Provides planning and coordination for facility improvements, deferred maintenance activities, infrastructure renewal, renovations, emergency repairs, and construction and alteration projects on a continuing basis. Develops budget recommendations, evaluates facility needs, coordinates contractor activities, and provides technical guidance regarding facilities operations, infrastructure planning, and building management practices. Integrates safety, regulatory compliance, and risk management into facilities operations and planning activities. Serves as the designated Department Safety Officer (DSO) and provides program-level leadership and oversight of safety functions affecting facilities operations, laboratories, experimental facilities, vessels, waterfront operations, and administrative spaces. Focuses on safety governance, compliance coordination, risk assessment, emergency preparedness, and institutional oversight rather than routine inspection or transactional safety activities. Provides technical leadership on complex facilities, operational, safety, and compliance issues requiring advanced professional judgment. Supervises professional and technical staff and represents SIO in coordination with campus Facilities Management, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), Emergency Management, Capital Program Management, and external regulatory agencies.

  • Advanced knowledge in the areas of building space planning, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, organization and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences
  • Advanced knowledge and skill regarding specialized research needs in space planning and advanced skill to effectively translate needs to professional architects and engineers
  • Advanced knowledge of architectural or engineering concepts
  • Experience assessing processes or services to make improvements and in project management
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Advanced skills in working collaboratively and influencing others
