Job Description

General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. General Excavating specializes in the construction of underground utilities, natural gas distribution, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil including bridge and concrete structures. General Excavating is searching for a highly motivated Project Engineer, who is expected to assist and monitor construction related activities in field operations. This role is responsible for the support of Project Managers and Superintendents to ensure project success. Assists with overall management of construction project sites and procurement through final acceptance, while ensuring project safety. Maximizes profits and cost controls to maintain stability and growth of the organization by performing the following duties.

Job Responsibility

  • Coordinates with Foreman / Superintendent / Project Manager to assist with recording data and layout of work as needed
  • Sets up GPS Base stations on horizontal and vertical control established by others
  • Verify staking and layout against project plans and specifications to ensure accuracy
  • Interprets project plans, specifications, and survey records to plan field survey work
  • Ensures as-built documentation of completed work through GPS data collection and redlines drawings are maintained weekly
  • Reviews recorded points and field conditions and supports quality control activities by verifying layout and dimensional tolerances
  • Downloads, processes, and uploads field data
  • Maintains organized survey records, including control points, field notes, and digital files
  • Troubleshoots and provides support with GPS and grade control equipment to maintain accuracy
  • Performs layout of work to establish reference points, elevations, and alignments in accordance with plans
  • Participates in dig permit processes according to project requirements
  • Coordinates with on-site personnel engaged in planning work procedures, executing work procedures, interpreting specifications, plans, and coordinating various phases of construction to prevent delays
  • Monitors and documents site conditions, project benchmarks, and control changes throughout the construction process
  • Ensures proper use, maintenance, and security of all survey equipment and tools
  • Completes work according to project safety program requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Three (3) years minimum related experience
  • or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
  • Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance
  • Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations
  • Physical ability to use hands and fingers, reach with arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Must meet qualifications and job duties, task frequency and PPE requirements
