Seventh College is one of UC San Diego's eight undergraduate colleges. The College’s theme, “A Changing Planet”, encompasses a broad range of pressing global issues such as the climate crisis, mass migration, and rapid cultural and technological change. The goal of Seventh College is to help students acquire the skills needed to confront these challenges. Building upon their expertise in their major field of study, students are encouraged to approach large-scale, global problems from an interdisciplinary perspective and are given numerous opportunities to gain critical academic and job market skills through project-based learning and research. The staff provide programs and services that support this academic mission by enhancing the educational, personal, cultural, and social development of students.
Job Responsibility:
Provide significant instructional support for three mission-critical student academic structures of the curriculum: Quarterly project showcases (such as SYNposium), the Synthesis Program Project Portal and Resource Bank, and the Synthesis 100 tutor program
Works independently to plan and facilitate the Synthesis Program’s high-profile quarterly project showcases including logistics and day-of event support
Utilize specialized knowledge in project-based learning and the climate crisis to collaborate with staff, undergraduate students, faculty, and relevant campus and community stakeholders to deliver academic programs to students that enhance their academic success
Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Program Operations to independently implement and manage aspects of The SYNcubator: The Seventh College Climate Collaborative
Oversee the Project Portal and Resource Bank, and with specialized knowledge of the climate crisis coordinates quarterly project submissions and publishing processes with students and faculty
In collaboration with the Associate Director of Project-Based Learning manages the SYN 100 tutor program, a program where undergraduate students provide support to students enrolled in SYN 100, the program’s project-based learning course
Mentor tutors in how to support students as they prepare their climate projects for a public audience
Collaborate with the Associate Director for Project-Based Learning to revise SYN 100 curricular materials to scaffold and assess both project showcases and Project Portal submissions
Requirements:
Experienced and knowledge of project-based learning pedagogy, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural / linguistic issues in applying academic support to students
Proven experience creating and managing processes for student work to reach public audiences, both through digital platforms and events
Experience with risk assessment and program evaluation for project-based learning initiatives
Knowledge of academic curricula with emphasis on climate change
Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution
Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models
Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting
May require knowledge of NCAA policies, rules, and regulations
