Job Description:

As a Progress Coach at Telford Sixth, you will play a vital role in supporting students throughout their academic journey. Working closely with teaching staff and academic tutors, you will provide dedicated guidance and pastoral support to a designated group of learners, helping them to stay motivated, overcome challenges, and achieve their full potential. You will monitor student progress, attendance, and performance, using regular coaching conversations and targeted interventions to ensure students remain on track to successfully complete their studies. By building positive relationships and maintaining high expectations, you will help create a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes wellbeing, independence, and academic success. This role is ideal for someone who is student-focused, proactive, and passionate about helping young people thrive during their sixth form experience.

Job Responsibility:

  • Manage an assigned caseload of students, as determined by the Faculty Director, to ensure the successful progression and completion of their studies
  • Provide information, advice, and guidance to support learner progression across different levels, enabling students to achieve their educational objectives
  • Assume responsibility for establishing the initial caseload at the start of each academic year, including students on six-week contracts, Kings Trust (KT) progressors, and those with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) or High Needs (HN), ensuring a successful induction during the initial weeks
  • Engage with students on a one-to-one basis to facilitate achievement of specific targets set by staff during academic reviews or positive behaviour support interventions
  • Ensure that students who commence programmes after the official start date receive their full induction entitlement
  • Identify and continuously monitor students deemed ‘at risk’ due to factors such as low attendance, poor punctuality, limited academic performance, or behavioural concerns. Implement targeted support strategies, which may include referral to appropriate internal and external support services, and ensure systematic tracking and updating of outcomes
  • Ensure student attendance is consistently monitored and addressed in accordance with the College’s Positive Behaviour Policy, promoting engagement and progress towards institutional targets. Where necessary, implement strategies to encourage positive attendance, such as meeting students in reception and accompanying them to classes, escorting students from vocational sessions to English and maths lessons, and maintaining a presence in classrooms to support attendance and behaviour
  • Communicate effectively with academic and support staff, parents/guardians, and employers or external agencies—within the parameters of Data Protection legislation—regarding the progress and development of individual students
  • Develop effective professional relationships with students and teaching staff, working within the College’s professional boundaries
  • Work closely with Student Services staff to maximise student success
  • Attend course team meetings
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, managers and external stakeholders to enhance the existing curriculum and develop new learning programmes focused on progression to further study and employment
  • Attend regular meetings and internal/external CPD sessions to support development, professional development, professional knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Develop an excellent working knowledge of the curriculum area

Requirements:

  • Awareness of, and empathy with, the needs of students
  • Knowledge of safeguarding issues in education or willingness to undertake training
  • Knowledge of current developments and issues in further and higher education or willingness to undertake training
  • Understanding and/or experience of aspects of the tutorial curriculum and outcomes for learners, including career learning and employability, health and wellbeing, internet safety
  • Experience of working in an education or related setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone and in writing with students, staff, parents and external agencies
  • Excellent organisation and IT skills and ability to prioritise own workload
  • An understanding of and commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity
  • Hold a Level 3 Certificate in Advice and Guidance or have a firm commitment to achieve one
  • Hold a Level 2 Children and Young People’s Mental Health qualification or have a firm commitment to achieve one
  • Level 2 qualification (GCSE A* – C, or equivalent) in maths and English or a willingness to attain these qualifications with the support of the College

Nice to have:

  • Hold a level 3 teaching/relevant qualification or have a firm commitment to achieve one (e.g. Award in education and training)
  • A-Level or equivalent qualification
