The Production Engineer will play a vital role in supporting the site’s Engineering and Reliability teams by manufacturing and repairing components, preparing PPM kits, and identifying continuous improvement opportunities within a highly regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. The role will also lead innovation initiatives, including the integration of 3D printing technologies for spare part production and prototyping. A key element of the position is ownership of the engineering workshop, ensuring the highest standards of Health, Safety, GMP compliance, and 5S workplace organisation. The Production Engineer will also collaborate with the Engineering Storeperson to apply technical knowledge and reverse engineering techniques to optimise spare part procurement and reduce costs. Additionally, the role includes training and mentoring apprentices in safe machining, fabrication, and engineering practices.
Job Responsibility:
Manufacture, repair, and modify mechanical components to support planned, corrective, and improvement maintenance activities within GMP and non-GMP areas
Provide technical support to shift engineers during breakdowns and planned maintenance activities
Prepare and assemble kits for Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) tasks
Maintain and calibrate all workshop tools and equipment in line with GMP and quality standards
Ensure traceability and documentation of all manufactured components in compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
Act as the Health & Safety owner for the engineering workshop
Develop and maintain risk assessments, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all workshop activities
Collaborate closely with the Reliability Engineering team to identify failure modes, drive root cause analysis (RCA), and implement reliability improvements
Support and lead corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) following equipment failures
Drive continuous improvement activities
Champion 5S principles within the workshop
Lead the introduction and application of 3D printing (additive manufacturing) for prototype and non-critical spare part production
Identify components suitable for additive manufacturing
Develop CAD models and maintain a validated digital library of printable spare parts
Work collaboratively with the Engineering Storeperson to identify cost-saving opportunities through reverse engineering and local manufacture of spare parts
Apply engineering expertise to assess component design, materials, and tolerances
Support technical investigations into obsolete or long lead-time spares
Mentor, coach, and train apprentices and junior engineers in machining, fabrication, and safe workshop practices
Requirements:
Time-served apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Maintenance Engineering
Experience working within a pharmaceutical or GMP-regulated manufacturing environment is essential
Skilled in manual machining, fabrication, and mechanical fitting
Proficient in CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360) and additive manufacturing
Knowledge of GMP, GEP, GDP, and pharmaceutical quality systems
Experience supporting stores or procurement activities through technical assessment or reverse engineering is advantageous
IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH qualification (or willingness to attain) desirable
