Job Description:

We are a diverse team of UX Engineers, Designers, UX Researchers, and Content Writers working together to bring the best experiences to our customers. We use AI in our day‑to‑day work, and we’re excited to tap into its potential to help us deliver even more value for our customers. Our team thrives on collaboration, growth, and learning, with a focus on driving transparency, efficiency, and consistency across all our products. We value reuse rather than reinvention. We contribute to each other’s work to make it better. We like to have fun, celebrate our wins, and learn and grow from our mistakes. We’re looking for a Principal UX Engineer to drive and define the investments that make AI a first‑class part of how we build products. You’ll shape how AI fits in our product lifecycle, evaluate emerging models, methods, and shape the tools, workflows, and guardrails that help PM, Design, and Engineering ship world class experiences in an AI-forward way. The focus is end‑to‑end efficacy - from ideation through design‑to‑code - so product makers can deliver customer impact at speed and scale without lowering quality, trust, or coherence. The ideal candidate is a seasoned UX engineer who is passionate about systems thinking, design-to-code processes, and the continuous improvement of how we build product and the systems that underpin it. You have a technical foundation, experience working with design systems and cross-disciplinary collaboration. You are a problem solver with a strategic mindset, driven by a customer-first and partnership-led approach. You value openness and strive for creating clear and cohesive experiences across products. You are also excited about mentoring junior engineers and collaborating across teams to elevate the product making process and foster a culture of innovation. In this individual contributor role, you’ll serve as the point person for AI enablement across Microsoft’s collaborative app experiences product groups in Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Engage, and Planner. You’ll evaluate emerging models and methods, identifying where they unlock meaningful new capabilities, and translating those opportunities into concrete platform investments. You’ll build (or prototype and prove) the tooling, workflows, and guardrails needed to scale AI‑assisted delivery, and you’ll partner closely with product teams to validate impact in real scenarios and turn what works into repeatable, scalable patterns.

Job Responsibility:

  • Set direction for AI-enabled product making across PM, Design, and Engineering
  • Build and scale AI design‑to‑code tooling, workflows, and reusable assets (templates, prompts, prototyping platforms, contribution scaffolding, etc.)
  • Evaluate new AI models and operationalize what works through guardrails and standards
  • Partner with product teams to prove impact, iterate based on usage, and drive adoption
  • Identify & implement tooling improvements to support more efficient design processes and closer alignment between design and engineering teams
  • Identify and assess new tools, particularly AI-driven technologies that could improve design. design to code processes, and product quality
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers, helping them grow their skillset
  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders, providing updates on status, challenges and opportunities

Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Graphic Design, Product Design, Visual Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 4+ years experience working in product or service design and/or shipping production code
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Graphic Design, Product Design, Visual Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 6+ years experience working in product or service design and/or shipping production code
  • OR 8+ years experience working in product or service design and/or shipping production code
  • OR equivalent experience

Nice to have:

  • 6+ years experience shipping production-ready code as a result of a collaborative process
  • 8+ years of experience with front-end technologies (Typescript and React are preferred)
  • Attention to detail, and quality while considering performance and maintainability
  • Ability to work effectively across disciplines (Design, Research, Engineering, PM)
  • Solid communication, problem-solving, planning, and negotiation skills
  • Comfortable working through ambiguity and multiple priorities
  • Experience with AI-assisted/led development practices
  • Experience working on large codebases
  • Experience with Figma and Figma component libraries and/or plugins
  • Experience with front-end build systems and tooling
  • Experience with animation and/or motion libraries

  • Quick team stand-up, one of your team members seem to be working on a problem you worked on before, and offer to pair with them after the stand-up to support
  • Pairing with one of your team members to work on a complex scalability issue together and grabbing a quick bite to re-fuel those pesky braincells in-between coding sessions!
  • Doing a design session with the Product Manager and UX designer for a large upcoming feature that the team should pick up next week. You ask a lot of questions to drill down to the problem we are trying to solve, and suggest some easier solutions that require less effort for the team.
  • The design session triggered some thoughts about other areas of the system that will be affected. You’re doing a quick dive in the affected areas of the code and find some technical debt that might affect the system’s scalability or reliability. You create a brief Jira ticket and tag the Product Manager to help get it prioritised and to ensure it is not forgotten. You also ping the ticket to one of the other domains' tech leads, as you recall them mentioning a similar problem existing in another domain team.
  • Quick catch-up with the Engineering Manager on the teams delivery reliability and how you can help keep Work in Progress (WIP) and Pull Request (PR) review time to a minimum
  • Talking about PR’s, there are actually still a few open. You take the last part of the day to review your teams PRs. There are some great solutions offered, but one of the junior engineers introduced some code that is difficult to maintain and is lacking unit tests. You jump on a quick call with them to explain the issues and why it matters.
