Job Description

Microsoft Quantum is building the world’s first scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer — one of the hardest engineering challenges of our generation. You’ll join a cross-disciplinary team of physicists, engineers, and computer scientists working across the full stack: from quantum device physics, through cryo-electronics and control systems, to Azure integration. At Microsoft Quantum, we aim to empower science and scientists to solve the world’s biggest problems by realizing advanced computing platforms at the intersection of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum information technology. Microsoft Quantum will change the world of computing and help solve some of humankind’s currently unsolvable problems. For more information about our team, visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/quantum. As a Principal Technical Program Manager (Quantum Manufacturing), you'll bring clarity and alignment to how our cleanroom and labs operates day-to-day. You'll own the end-to-end lot lifecycle — from wafer-in to data-out — coordinating across fabrication, packaging, and measurement teams to ensure priorities are clear, handoffs are seamless, and everyone is working from the same plan. This role carries a dual mandate: drive rigorous execution and throughput on today's deliverables, while strategically balancing our fab capacity between development and production to meet our roadmap. You'll build on our existing manufacturing foundations to mature our operations from pilot-line R&D toward low-volume production — making our production reliable, repeatable, and ready to grow. Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Job Responsibility

  • Own the full lot lifecycle from wafer-in to data-out: coordinate across fabrication, packaging, and cryogenic loading for measurement to ensure seamless handoffs and unbroken visibility at every stage
  • Own the master production schedule and drive daily execution with a relentless focus on throughput and quality — managing expedites, resolving blockers, and keeping stakeholders informed on status, risks, and recovery plans
  • Drive alignment on fab capacity allocation across competing priorities: balance resources across production delivery, process development, and technology R&D — ensuring plans are grounded in the program roadmap and scaling priorities
  • Plan and schedule maintenance windows to minimize production impact
  • Own production-level KPIs and dashboards — throughput, cycle time, equipment uptime, and schedule adherence — ensuring they are accurate, accessible, and actionable
  • Partner with quality/yield engineering and process integration teams to sharpen focus on the KPIs that truly matter — challenging assumptions, connecting data to outcomes, and ensuring yield improvements translate into real production impact
  • Partner with process engineering and integration teams to coordinate tech transfers, split-lot management, and wafer disposition — ensuring each transfer follows a clear stage-gate framework with a defined threshold for 'production-ready'

Requirements

  • Bachelors or above in Engineering, Operations management or related discipline
  • Significant experience in manufacturing, production operations, hardware development, supply chain, or related technical environments
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex cross-functional programs involving multiple engineering and operational stakeholders
  • Communication and stakeholder management skills — with a proven ability to drive alignment across multiple teams without direct authority
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-evolving environments where you'll need to build systems and processes alongside the people using them
  • Significant experience in semiconductor manufacturing, fabrication operations, hardware production, or other complex technical manufacturing environments, ideally including R&D, pilot-line, or pre-production settings where processes are still maturing
  • Track record of managing end-to-end production flow across multiple process areas (e.g., fabrication, packaging, test)
  • Experience in small-scale or pilot-line environments transitioning toward low-volume manufacturing — including navigating the tension between development and production priorities
  • Analytical skills with experience using production data to drive decisions (yield analysis, cycle time tracking, statistical process control (SPC))
  • Experience defining and implementing stage-gate or manufacturing readiness review frameworks
  • Experience working as production coordinator, process integration, product management or similar
  • Experience managing or leading a team of engineers or technicians in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience working across multiple countries and time zones with distributed engineering teams
  • Technical fluency in quantum computing, photonics, semiconductor physics, or related deep-tech domains — sufficient to engage credibly with scientists and engineers (PhD not required)
  • Experience with MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), ERP, or fab scheduling tools
  • Experience in statistical analysis processes and software
  • Demonstrated experience in production scheduling, Work-in-progress (WIP) management, and capacity planning in a fab or cleanroom setting
  • Experience building or leading new process introduction (NPI) / tech transfer processes — transitioning R&D outputs into repeatable production
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter
  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations
  • Experience with AI-driven productivity tools (e.g., Copilot, automated testing, intelligent alerting)
  • Hands-on experience using latest AI development tools to drive engineering efficiency

Nice to have
