You will play a key role in the growth of the Ports and Harbours team by leading marine consultancy projects across navigational risk, vessel manoeuvring, port operations, and marine governance. You will help clients navigate evolving regulatory demands by delivering expert services such as safety audits, marine risk assessments, and the development of robust safety management systems. Your work will support risk reduction across the port value chain and strengthen operational resilience in complex marine environments.
Job Responsibility:
Plan and deliver consultancy projects to optimise port operations, enhance efficiency, and improve safety performance
Provide expert advice on port compliance with international and national legislation, the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC), and other relevant regulations through tailored audits and reviews
Support technical due diligence by assessing infrastructure, safety systems, and operational readiness for new, expanding, or modified ports and terminals
Conduct navigational and marine risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure safe, efficient port operations
Lead HAZID workshops and develop risk mitigation strategies for port expansion, redevelopment, and construction projects
Develop and implement Marine Safety Management Systems (MSMS) and Emergency Response Plans (ERP)
Deliver training on marine safety, regulatory compliance, and risk management to duty holders, port personnel, and contractors
Prepare, coordinate, and participate in bid development to secure new work, both directly and in collaboration with ABL Group business segments
Contribute to business strategy, marketing initiatives, and the development and delivery of relevant service offerings
Undertake fee‑earning assignments and maintain a billable utilisation level above 70%
Support other business areas aligned with your skills and expertise, including hull and machinery damage surveys, P&I condition and pre‑entry surveys, expert witness work, and related survey activities
Represent the company within the ports and harbours sector, as well as in legal and insurance markets
Ensure compliance with Quality and HSE aspects within your region, department and projects
Requirements:
Unlimited Master Mariner (STCW II/2)
A minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience within the marine industry
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Teams, and Adobe PDF applications
Excellent reporting skills with the ability to deliver high‑quality work within required timeframes
The capability to manage multiple issues and assignments simultaneously
A thorough understanding of the PMSC and its accompanying guide
Familiarity with the legal and regulatory framework applicable to UK ports
A strong grasp of the operational, navigational, and commercial aspects of ports and shipping
Nice to have:
Prior experience as a Deputy Harbour Master, Harbour Master, or Marine Pilot
Experience in marine consultancy and exposure to marine claims
