Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Principal Lawyer to provide strategic legal leadership within a dynamic local authority legal services team. This role offers the opportunity to lead legal professionals, shape service delivery, and contribute to high-level organisational decision-making while ensuring the Council operates lawfully and effectively.

Job Responsibility:

  • Providing senior-level legal advice and strategic guidance to officers, members and senior stakeholders
  • Leading, managing and developing a team of lawyers to ensure high-quality service delivery
  • Overseeing allocation of work, resources and external legal spend within budget parameters
  • Managing complex and high-profile legal matters and providing advocacy where required
  • Supporting organisational decision-making and contributing to policy development and implementation
  • Driving service transformation, continuous improvement and innovative working practices
  • Developing strong working relationships across Council services and with external partners
  • Representing Legal Services at senior internal and external meetings where required
  • Contributing to operational and longer-term strategic planning for Legal Services

Requirements:

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX eligible to practise in England and Wales with a current practising certificate
  • Significant post-qualification experience within local government or a comparable public sector legal environment
  • Proven experience managing and developing legal teams or supervising professional staff
  • Strong strategic advisory skills with experience handling complex and sensitive legal matters
  • Demonstrable experience managing competing priorities, resources and budgets effectively
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder influencing skills
  • Advocacy experience or demonstrable aptitude for advocacy

Nice to have:

  • Experience operating at senior leadership or management level within Legal Services
  • Experience contributing to organisational change, service transformation or improvement programmes
  • Strong understanding of governance, political structures and decision-making within a local authority environment
