Job Description:

justteachers is looking for a dedicated and patient SEN Support Assistant with expertise in Autism (ASD) to join a welcoming primary school in Loughborough. This role involves working 1:1 with a child in Key Stage 1, providing the consistency and specialized support they need to navigate the school day effectively. You will be instrumental in implementing sensory-friendly strategies and visual timetables to help reduce anxiety and encourage classroom participation.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide tailored 1:1 support for a student with ASD, focusing on emotional regulation and communication
  • Implement Now and Next boards and visual schedules to help the student manage transitions throughout the school day
  • Liaise with the school's SENCO and external therapists to follow and adapt individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
  • Create a calm zone within the classroom to provide a safe space for the student when they become overwhelmed
  • Assist the class teacher in adapting mainstream lesson materials to ensure they are accessible and engaging for the pupil

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent experience in an SEN setting)
  • Previous experience supporting children with Autism, particularly within a primary school environment
  • Training in or knowledge of PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) or Makaton is highly desirable
  • A calm, resilient, and proactive approach to behavioral challenges and sensory needs
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to build a strong, trusting bond with a child
