Job Description

Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Preventative Maintenance Coordinator will supervise maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking is based on ASC schedule requirements.

Job Responsibility

  • Implements and maintains a safe workplace program and ensure that safety is the highest priority on the jobsite.
  • Supervises the activities of Facilities craft personnel on station
  • Supervises and performs hands-on diagnosis, repair, and scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing facilities, equipment, systems, and infrastructure
  • Prepares and documents work plans, job hazard analysis, job safety analysis, code required forms, checklists, and internal procedural documents as required
  • Provides ASC Facilities Maintenance Management/Station Facilities Engineer with status updates regarding on ice changes in scheduling, resource loading, safety, work procedures, equipment failures/incidents, and operating postures of critical Facilities Life/Safety equipment
  • Ensures the Crafts are trained in ASC Environmental, Safety & Health Program (ESH) program, applicable Standard Operating Procedures, Guides and Plans, and for craft training in Maximo
  • Holds crafts accountable for work order completion and MAXIMO data integrity
  • Timely response to emergency service calls during and outside normal working hours
  • Maintains effective communication between departments and represents department as needed at operational meetings
  • Advises Facilities Maintenance Supervisor of job progress, material/labor requirements, and personnel matters
  • Accomplishes tasking working from Job Plans, verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable specifications and codes
  • Follows established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directed
  • Routinely utilizes independent judgment and discretion to identify potential issues and solve problems
  • Proactively identifies any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicates them effectively
  • Works directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking
  • Evaluates labor and material needs for tasking and assign duties to subordinate staff as appropriate
  • Interprets schedules, design drawings, specifications and diagrams to carry out tasking
  • Evaluates and identifies job hazards and effectively communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and daily crew meetings
  • Provides suggestions and recommendations for re-hiring, termination and advancement of staff
  • Performs quality assurance review of Facilities Maintenance work and related documentation
  • Ensures accurate material and labor charge code use, and accurate/timely timecard submittal
  • Ensures accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved
  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates to relay information, including staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, Quality Assurance procedures, and ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH).
  • Assists with the ordering of resupply materials for the department to maintain adequate inventory on station
  • Occasionally utilizes the assistance of other station personnel to complete tasking, or assists other trades or departments with their tasking
  • Communicates with ASC Teammates, National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, as needed, over the telephone, via email, and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Works with Human Resources to address conflict or personnel issues as they arise
  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism
  • Provides timely performance feedback to staff and timely submission of end-of-season evaluations to Human Resources
  • Ensures staff attendance at required trainings and maintain records of departmental trainings
  • Communicates professionally and informatively with subordinates
  • Complies with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements
  • Implements and maintains Work Center Safety Program and participate in ASC safety objectives
  • Participate in community programs such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (station clean-up), “GASH” (galley clean-up at Palmer), and recycling efforts
  • Performs other duties as required

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • A minimum of six years documented experience in all phases of preventive and corrective maintenance, including industrial and/or commercial facilities maintenance experience on refrigeration, HVAC, combustion heating appliances, plumbing, and electrical
  • Minimum three of the six years’ experience must be in a lead, supervisor or foreman role with a progressive increase in responsibility supervising craft foremen and crafts persons
  • Possess the competencies, willingness, and ability to perform the duties of position
  • Proficient in management of personnel and projects
  • Proficient in providing leadership and acting as a role model
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Skilled in ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenance manual and manufacturer’s troubleshooting guides to accomplish tasking
  • Experienced developing written work plans, job hazard analysis, and job safety analysis related to the work activities under a permit to work system
  • Intermediate level computer skills
  • MS Office Suite experience to include Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledgeable of, and willing to learn and effectively utilize, computer based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications
  • Competent in LOTO procedures for appropriate tasking
  • Proficient in risk assessment and determination of PPE appropriate to specific tasking
  • Knowledgeable of limits of PPE and proper maintenance of PPE
  • Familiar with fall protection and respirator use
  • Competent analyzing situations and making technical and safety decisions based on specifications and applicable codes and manufacturer guidelines
  • Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problems
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
