Job Description

We are currently recruiting a reliable, proactive and practical Premises Officer to join a specialist SEMH school in the Burgess Hill area. This full-time, temp-to-perm role is vital in ensuring the safety, security, cleanliness and maintenance of the school buildings and grounds, supporting a safe and positive learning environment for students and staff. Working alongside the Premises Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining the school’s infrastructure, carrying out day-to-day site duties and responding to maintenance and health & safety requirements.

Job Responsibility

  • Managing site security, including alarms, locks, CCTV and fire safety systems
  • Carrying out general maintenance and handyperson duties (e.g., painting, basic plumbing, minor repairs)
  • Liaising with contractors for larger maintenance and repair works
  • Ensuring the premises are clean, secure and well-maintained at all times
  • Supporting compliance with health and safety regulations, including legionella testing
  • Providing porterage support, including moving furniture and equipment
  • Maintaining external areas and ensuring safe access, particularly during adverse weather

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a caretaking, site or premises role (school experience desirable)
  • Good practical maintenance and DIY skills
  • A strong understanding of health and safety procedures
  • A reliable, proactive and flexible approach to work
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Access to a car and willingness to travel between sites
  • Must have the right to work in the UK or hold a valid work visa
  • Provide suitable references for pre-employment checks
  • Hold an enhanced DBS on the Children’s Workforce (or Children’s & Adults’) update service, or be willing to obtain one
