The Manchester Evening News is looking for a Political Writer who cares about Manchester and the north to help fight for its future. The role involves creating local and national political content, bringing in exclusive stories, spotting trends, writing quick takes to deadline, running live blogs, and creating analysis & commentary.

Job Responsibility:

  • Serve as the definitive political voice of the Manchester Evening News to influential stakeholders
  • Take the lead on crafting crucial brand content, including high-impact opinion pieces
  • Represent the title's interests at the highest levels of regional government
  • Build and maintain a sophisticated network of contacts across the city and the wider North
  • Generate exclusive political content and sharp analysis that sets the regional agenda
  • Tell the stories of how politics and policy impacts on people's lives
  • Pick subjects for wider development and analysis
  • Be a dedicated cheerleader for the people of Greater Manchester, consistently placing the audience at the forefront of content creation
  • Maintain a commanding and authoritative voice on social media
  • Work some evenings and weekend shifts on a rota basis

Requirements:

  • Senior qualified (NQJ or time served) journalist
  • Up to date UK media law knowledge
  • Proven wealth of experience reporting on news in a fast paced regional or national newsroom environment
  • Deep understanding of how politics and the public sector works
  • Passion for news and politics
  • Excellent storytelling skills
  • Deep understanding of how to make content engaging
  • General and political reporting experience
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into understandable copy
