Performs journey level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of sanitary fixtures, sewage systems, performs remodeling, renovation, and maintenance of plumbing systems. Makes regular inspections of structural facilities or equipment, reads blueprints for specifications of particular work assignments for ongoing projects. Maintains and prepares records and reports relative to the plumbing system at the Chester Mental Health Center and other facilities when necessary or as requested. Maintains a supply of tools, materials, and equipment necessary for the job and reports repairs and replaces various types of equipment as necessary for the safe operation of the Chester Mental Health Center. Instructs semi-skilled workers, trade helpers and/or inmates and contractual vendors in performing or assisting with plumbing and similar tasks such as digging trenches and backfilling operations for broken water mains. Travels to other facilities to perform general plumbing work.
Job Responsibility:
Receives day to day guidance from the Chief Stationary Engineer
Makes regular inspections of structural facilities or equipment, reads blueprints for specifications of particular work assignments for ongoing projects to solve issues and to determine work details, procedures and estimate tolls, materials and supplies needed for each project
Performs or directs trenching, excavating and back filling operations necessary to begin or continue work on underground installations or assists others in performance of same
Maintains a supply of tools, materials, and equipment necessary for the job and reports repairs and replaces various types of equipment as necessary for the safe operation of the Chester Mental Health Center
Travels to other facilities to perform general plumbing work
Performs other duties as required or assigned that are within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Requirements:
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school
Requires possession of a current valid plumber’s license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health
Requires possession or the acquisition of the certificate as a Universal Technician under United States Environmental Protection Agency rules Section 608 within 6 months of employment
Requires the possession of a valid certificate as a Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) or the acquisition of the certificate within the probationary period of employment
Requires a valid, appropriate driver’s license and the ability to travel
Requires ability to access all locations of facility including basements, crawl spaces, tunnels, attics and roofs
Requires physical ability to lift and carry heavy items and material such as ladders, bundles of copper pipes, case iron fittings, tripods and pushing carts laden with tools including pipe machines, materials and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds independently (up to 100 pounds with assistance)
Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers
Requires the ability read and understand laws relating to sanitation and public health
Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check
Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law
