Job Description:

Collects blood from patients of all ages for the purpose of diagnostic testing.

Job Responsibility:

  • Completes order entry of tests into the LIS
  • Gathers and documents necessary clinical information
  • Refers questions regarding information to appropriate clinician
  • Selects appropriate venous puncture site based on knowledge of pathophysiology
  • Performs phlebotomy for collection of blood for clinical and research testing
  • Monitors individuals to ensure comfort, safety and adequate blood flow
  • Monitors individuals for adverse reactions
  • Select and prepare tubes/containers, paperwork, labels and forms
  • Has knowledge of testing requirements for clinical tests including special handling requirements
  • Monitors and stock supplies
  • Notify appropriate staff when reorder levels are reached
  • Provides positive customer service that supports departmental and hospital operations
  • Performs and records quality control measures to insure accurate equipment performance, making and documenting necessary adjustments
  • Participates in continuous improvement efforts
  • Contributes to teamwork within and between departments and organizations

Requirements:

  • High School / GED required
  • At least 6 months Phlebotomy experience preferred
  • Current certification as a phlebotomist by a national certifying agency (e.g. ASCP) is preferred
