Under the direction of the Collections Manager, the Collections Specialist II (CSII) screens donors for eligibility to donate blood and performs phlebotomy and automated collections in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) while providing excellent customer service, encouraging donors to return to donate and continuing to support the community’s blood program.
Job Responsibility:
Verify donor identification and critical information to ensure donor and blood product safety
Conduct donor history interviews following established SOPs and document accurately and concurrently
Measure and document vital signs
Perform and interpret hemoglobin testing
Assess interview responses, vital signs, and test results to determine donor eligibility
Perform routine and special phlebotomies in accordance with SOPs
Prepare equipment, perform venipuncture, and properly label blood bags and samples
Accurately record all required donor and collection data
Provide continuous care to donors throughout the donation process
Explain donation procedures and post-donation care instructions
Answer donor questions and educate donors on community blood needs
Observe donors in the canteen area for delayed reactions
Assess donor incidents, initiate treatment as needed, report incidents to leadership, and complete required documentation
Thank donors and encourage repeat donations, including scheduling future appointments
Coordinate, operate, and monitor automated collection procedures
Perform and document quality control (QC) procedures on equipment, reagents, and techniques
Monitor QC results and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
Meet daily, monthly, and annual automated collection goals
Maintain competency in whole blood and automated collection procedures
Attend required training sessions, seminars, and meetings with the Apheresis Technical Manager as needed
Assist with set-up and break-down of mobile blood drives
Perform opening and closing duties at fixed sites
Ensure collection sites are clean, organized, and fully stocked with supplies
Work collaboratively with team members to support efficient operations
Stay current with new techniques and best practices related to blood procurement, donor safety, and product safety
Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent
4-6 months as Blood Collections Specialist 1-mobile
Graduation from a phlebotomy program or other healthcare program (Medical Assistant, Nurse Aide, EMT, etc.) preferred
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
National phlebotomy certification preferred
Current CPR certification (American Heart Association standards)
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
Phlebotomy experience required
At least 1 year of experience as a phlebotomist preferred

Excellent phlebotomy skills (must maintain a 95% or higher success rate)
