Pharmacist Clinical Specialist – Oncology is responsible for providing clinical services in the oncology clinic setting. Responsibilities include: collaboration with nursing and medical staff with medication chart reviews to assist in the optimization of medication therapy, implementing up-to-date pharmacotherapy and treatment guidelines with providers, conducting Drug Utilization Reviews and preparing Drug Review Criteria for medical staff review at Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, assisting in the development of new clinical services focused on strategic initiatives, providing oversight of clinical services in area of expertise and collecting and analyzing quality metrics within the oncology specialty area. In addition, the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Oncology is an active preceptor for PGY1 residents and pharmacy students and a clinical resource for pharmacy staff.
Job Responsibility:
Review and verify chemotherapy orders to ensure accuracy and safety
Monitor for potential drug interactions and manage side effects of chemotherapy
Provide recommendations for supportive care medications
Perform therapeutic drug monitoring to optimize dosing and minimize toxicity
Oversee preparation of compounds, labeling, and packaging of medications and pharmaceuticals, in accordance with established professional protocols and standards
Oversee work of Pharmacy Technicians/Pharmacy Interns participating in the preparation, documentation and dispensing of medications and pharmaceuticals
Communicate drug-related side effects, dosages, potential complications to health care professionals
Advise patients and/or their representatives on use of various medications, including dosage, side effects and composition
Remain informed about current developments concerning new drugs or test results regarding drug usage
research drug information requests and responds promptly
Promote effective use of formulary through drug product selection and therapeutic alternative product suggestion for non-formulary orders
Consult with and advise medical staff regarding utilization of drugs and pharmaceuticals
Adhere to TMC Health organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values policies, and standards
Collect and analyze quality metrics in specialty area
Provide education to pharmacy interns, students and PGY1 residents
Participate in quality improvement committees as assigned
Perform related duties as assigned
Requirements:
Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an AACP-accredited College of Pharmacy or bachelor’s degree from an AACP-accredited College of Pharmacy
Five (5) years of clinical pharmacist experience or completion PGY1 residency with three (3) years of additional experience or PGY2 with one (1) additional year of experience
Arizona pharmacist license upon hire
Knowledge of drugs, possible side effects or interactions with other drugs, and how to compound medication in accordance with professional standards and practices
Skill in following physicians’ orders and prescribed medications and relaying any procedures and concerns to the patient
Skill in responding to patients’ questions or concerns
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
Ability to effectively present information and respond to inquiries or complaints from employees, patients and/or their representatives, and the public
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents or logarithms
Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, single or multiple regressions, determination of test reliability and validity, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.)
Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
Nice to have:
Pharmacy residency preceptor experience
Board certified in Pharmacotherapy or in specialty area if certification available within 12 months of eligibility for certification preferred
