This position is responsible for specialized processing services for building permits. The position is heavily customer service-based, requiring a strong and excellent customer service approach with internal and external customers. The candidate will provide information and guidance regarding procedures for all types of building permits, which includes reviewing all the information and/or documentation that is required on the permit applications. The positions are office based and may require sitting or standing for long periods of time.
Job Responsibility:
Assist homeowners, contractors, or others applying for a permit with routine and technical information related to the issuance of building permits
Assist the public in completing applications and other required forms
Provide information and guidance regarding procedures for all types of building permits
Review permit applications for provisions of all required information and/or documentation
Distribute applications for necessary reviews
Monitor progress of permit review
Verify completion of all required reviews and notify applicant of approved permit
Serve as liaison between reviewing agencies and applicant
Perform specialized processing functions for permits
May be assigned as special liaison with high volume customers
Track permit through inspection process to advise customer of status, problems, and final approval
Maintain building permit packets with detailed files of official records pertaining to the process
Address public records requests
Answer phones and assist customers at the counter
Handle customer questions and issues regarding permit requirements
Refer technical questions to appropriate staff and advise customer of action taken as necessary
May include image documents using small and large-format scanners
Maintain confidentiality of records
May be assigned to other office locations based upon operational needs
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Manager
Requirements:
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED
Three (3) years of general clerical experience
Minimum of two (2) years in strong customer service
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, building, or permitting (preferred)
Experience working with permitting type software (a plus)
Ability to deal with the general public in a professional, courteous manner
Being bi-lingual is a plus (Spanish / Creole)
Knowledge of general construction permit processing
Knowledge of basic land development and construction permit requirements
Knowledge of general permit processing and procedures
Knowledge of County offices and functions
Knowledge of land development and construction terminology
Able to accurately answer questions and resolve problem situations or refer to appropriate office
Able to follow check lists and recognize different types of required exhibits and plans
Hands-on experience with desktop computer applications
Skilled in the use of various office equipment
Able to work under stressful conditions
Able to interact effectively with others
Must be able to commute to other office locations based upon operational needs
Nice to have:
Being bi-lingual is a plus (Spanish / Creole)
Experience working with permitting type software is a plus
