We are looking for a Payroll Specialist to join a service-focused organization in Birmingham, Michigan in a contract-to-permanent capacity. This position plays a key role in ensuring payroll is processed accurately, reporting is completed on schedule, and financial records remain aligned across payroll and accounting activities. The ideal candidate brings strong payroll expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to manage detailed work in a deadline-driven environment while supporting both internal teams and operational staff.
Job Responsibility
Manage biweekly payroll reconciliations and maintain balanced payroll-related records to support accurate reporting
Prepare certified payroll documentation, billing details, and required reports in compliance with applicable standards
Review monthly payroll and accounting information across related records, identify discrepancies, and resolve issues promptly
Maintain audit controls between payroll and general ledger activity to help ensure reliable financial reporting
Analyze complex payroll transactions and provide guidance to team members on appropriate accounting treatment
Conduct internal reviews across payroll processes, document findings, and assemble support materials for external audits
Participate in regular reviews of hours, earnings, and payroll files before final approval and transmission
Record completion of audit steps thoroughly and escalate exceptions or concerns to payroll leadership when needed
Assist with training and day-to-day support for entry-level payroll staff as assigned
Stay current on payroll, accounting, tax, and labor requirements through ongoing development and applied learning
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in payroll, accounting, or a related field
At least 5 years of hands-on experience with payroll processing and timekeeping systems
Strong understanding of general ledger activity and core accounting principles
Working knowledge of payroll tax rules, labor regulations, garnishments, and multi-state payroll practices
Proficiency with ADP Workforce Now, Microsoft Word, Excel, and payroll-related software tools
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and solve problems effectively
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work professionally across all levels of an organization
High attention to detail, sound judgment with sensitive information, and a collaborative approach to supporting coworkers and vendors
