The Payroll Specialist is responsible for the administration and integrity of the organization's payroll systems, including the Time and Attendance System and Employee Information System (EIS). This role ensures accurate financial payroll data reporting and focuses heavily on audit, compliance, and support as it relates to collective agreements, Service policy, Canadian payroll, labour, and tax legislation. The specialist will actively work to improve associated processes for efficiency and accuracy.
Job Responsibility:
Administer and maintain the Time and Attendance System and Employee Information System (EIS), ensuring data accuracy and system functionality
Ensure payroll processes are in full compliance with Canadian payroll, labour, and tax legislation, as well as Service policy and relevant collective agreements
Process and manage payroll data, focusing on financial data integrity and accurate reporting
Conduct internal audits of payroll records and transactions to ensure accuracy and compliance
Serve as a subject matter expert for payroll-related inquiries, providing support and guidance to employees and management
Interpret and apply complex documents, including collective agreements and various pieces of legislation (e.g., Employment Standards Act, Income Tax Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act)
Identify opportunities for, and implement, improvements to current payroll processes
Requirements:
A minimum 3-year college diploma (e.g., business, bookkeeping, accounting, software) plus 2 years of relevant pre-job experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Income Tax Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Family Responsibility and Enforcement Act, etc.
Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret collective agreements
Proficiency in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, etc.)
Experience with major payroll systems (e.g., PeopleSoft and Kronos is highly desirable)
