We are looking for an experienced Payroll Specialist to join a nonprofit in Tacoma, Washington on a Contract basis. This role will take ownership of payroll activities, support continuity during a staffing transition, and help ensure employees are paid accurately and on schedule. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on payroll expertise, works comfortably with established procedures, and can contribute quickly in a collaborative environment.
Job Responsibility
Manage end-to-end payroll processing for roughly 120 employees, including both hourly and salaried team members on varying pay cycles
Act as the primary point of contact for payroll operations, delivering accurate and timely pay while maintaining dependable service for the organization
Review, update, and preserve payroll documentation, records, and audit support to meet internal standards and regulatory expectations
Use existing procedures and reference materials to maintain consistency and reduce disruption during the contract assignment
Investigate payroll variances and respond to employee questions by working closely with internal partners to resolve issues efficiently
Take part in cross-training and knowledge-sharing efforts to support a smooth handoff of payroll responsibilities
Prepare payroll data and reports in systems such as Paylocity and Excel to support routine processing and reconciliation
Help maintain payroll compliance across applicable wage, hour, and organizational policy requirements
Requirements
Demonstrated experience handling full-cycle payroll in a detail-focused setting
Strong working knowledge of Paylocity with the ability to contribute with minimal ramp-up time
Background processing payroll for employees across multiple pay structures
multi-state experience is preferred
Proficiency with Excel for payroll review, reporting, and reconciliation tasks
Ability to maintain accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
Strong communication skills and a service-oriented approach when addressing payroll questions and discrepancies
Experience in a nonprofit setting or genuine interest in supporting a mission-focused organization
Familiarity with large-volume payroll environments, including experience supporting workforces of 500+ employees, is a plus
