We are looking for a Payroll Specialist to join a growing organization in Chattanooga, Tennessee on a contract-to-permanent basis. This position supports payroll operations for a large, multi-state workforce and plays a key role in keeping employee pay accurate, timely, and well-documented. The ideal candidate brings strong payroll processing experience, sound judgment when resolving pay-related questions, and confidence working with payroll data and reporting tools.
Job Responsibility
Process bi-weekly payroll for a large employee population across numerous locations in multiple states, ensuring timely and accurate pay for hourly and salaried team members
Review timesheet submissions, identify missing approvals or discrepancies, and coordinate with field teams to resolve outstanding payroll items before each pay cycle is finalized
Enter and validate variable compensation details such as commissions, bonuses, deductions, and other earnings adjustments within the payroll system
Investigate and respond to employee payroll concerns, including direct deposit changes, deduction questions, and other issues that affect paycheck accuracy
Support garnishment administration by helping track, update, and maintain related payroll records in accordance with established procedures
Prepare recurring payroll reports and share key data with leadership to support visibility into payroll activity, exceptions, and follow-up items
Monitor payroll tax-related reporting and tracking needs while working within Paycom, which manages filing activity
Generate and maintain scheduled files and exports, including monthly workers’ compensation reporting and payroll data downloads for analysis in Excel
Assist with payroll maintenance activities between processing cycles, including audits, reconciliations, and updates that improve data quality and readiness for the next run
Requirements
Experience managing full-cycle payroll processing in a high-volume environment with more than 500 employees
Hands-on knowledge of multi-state payroll practices and the ability to work accurately across a distributed workforce
Prior use of Paycom or a comparable payroll platform for payroll processing, employee pay updates, and reporting
Understanding of payroll components such as hourly and salaried pay, deductions, commissions, bonuses, and garnishments
Ability to troubleshoot payroll discrepancies, research issues thoroughly, and communicate next steps clearly to employees and internal teams
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for downloading, reviewing, and organizing payroll data and reports
Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to stay organized during high-volume payroll periods
