We are looking for an experienced payroll specialist to support a service organization in Long Beach, California. This Long-term Contract position will lead full-cycle payroll operations across multiple entities and states while helping maintain accurate employee, benefits, and tax records. The role is well suited for someone who brings strong union payroll knowledge, a sharp understanding of compliance requirements, and confidence working with payroll and HR systems in a fast-paced environment.
Job Responsibility:
Direct end-to-end weekly payroll processing for several business entities with employees working in multiple states, ensuring each pay cycle is completed accurately and on schedule
Maintain employee payroll and HR records by processing new hires, separations, pay updates, withholding changes, and direct deposit information with close attention to detail
Oversee payroll system administration and electronic timekeeping data, keeping employee information current and supporting reliable approval workflows
Handle union payroll activities, including dues calculations, fringe benefit tracking, and wage administration in alignment with collective bargaining agreements
Review payroll-related transactions for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including wage and hour requirements and multi-state tax reporting obligations
Partner with finance and HR stakeholders to verify benefits deductions, garnishments, and other payroll adjustments while providing guidance on payroll-related questions
Prepare payroll accounting support such as journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting needed for the general ledger and internal financial review
Produce payroll and personnel reports for leadership, auditors, and outside agencies, and assist with payroll, benefits, and insurance audit requests
Recommend and support improvements to payroll and benefits administration processes, including opportunities to streamline workflows and strengthen policy consistency
Requirements:
At least 10 years of payroll experience, including work in multi-state and multi-entity environments
Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with payroll and benefits administration platforms, including reporting, data imports and exports, and system integrations
Demonstrated knowledge of union payroll practices and the ability to interpret collective bargaining agreements
Strong understanding of federal and state payroll tax rules, wage and hour laws, and overall payroll compliance standards
Experience supporting payroll audits, year-end activities, and related tax documents such as W-2 processing
Proficiency with timekeeping systems and workflow administration, along with strong Microsoft Excel skills
Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills with a consistent record of accuracy under tight deadlines
Experience with full-cycle payroll for large employee populations, including environments with more than 500 employees
