Job Description

We are looking for a Payroll Specialist I to join a construction and contractor organization in San Antonio, Texas. This contract-to-permanent opportunity is ideal for a payroll specialist who can manage multi-state payroll with accuracy, discretion, and strong follow-through in a fast-paced, in-office environment. The person in this role will support timely payroll operations, respond to employee questions, and work closely with internal partners to maintain compliance and reporting standards.

Job Responsibility

  • Administer end-to-end payroll processing for weekly, biweekly, and off-cycle pay runs across multiple states, ensuring wages, paid time off, garnishments, insurance deductions, and retirement contributions are handled correctly
  • Oversee timekeeping records by reviewing submitted hours for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to company policies before payroll is finalized
  • Verify employee updates submitted through payroll and third-party systems to confirm changes are properly reflected in payroll records
  • Coordinate with payroll team members to enter, balance, and validate payroll data so each cycle is completed accurately and on schedule
  • Investigate and resolve employee payroll questions promptly, providing clear communication and dependable customer support
  • Prepare payroll reports and supporting data used for prevailing wage documentation and related compliance needs
  • Work alongside Human Resources on compensation, benefits, disability-related pay items, and retirement contribution activity that impacts employee pay
  • Support payroll tax administration by organizing documentation for payroll tax transactions, periodic filings, annual reporting, and audit requests
  • Maintain strict confidentiality while assisting with special assignments and additional payroll-related projects as business needs evolve

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of recent experience processing payroll, including full-cycle payroll responsibilities
  • Hands-on knowledge of multi-state payroll practices and applicable federal, state, and local wage and hour requirements
  • Experience working with garnishments, employee deductions, benefits withholdings, and retirement contributions
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for payroll review, reconciliation, and reporting tasks
  • Familiarity with ADP Workforce Now and Deltek Costpoint is strongly preferred
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines with a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced office setting
  • Strong communication skills and a detail-oriented approach to working with internal teams and employee inquiries
  • Willingness to work in an on-site environment and accommodate occasional evening or weekend payroll deadlines when needed
