Job Description

The city of Melrose seeks a detail-oriented and proactive Payroll Manager to own and lead city and school payroll operations. This role ensures accurate, timely weekly payroll while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and municipal regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and internal policies. This is an opportunity to shape processes, drive improvements, and elevate how payroll supports the organization. The Payroll Manager audits payroll submissions, identifies trends and discrepancies, and leads process enhancements to strengthen efficiency and internal controls. Serving as the subject matter expert for MUNIS payroll, they provide guidance and training to department heads and payroll clerks, ensuring consistency and system integrity. Ideal candidates bring strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and a hands-on approach to problem-solving and process improvement. Experience with payroll systems (MUNIS preferred) and advanced Excel skills required. Ability to manage deadlines in a high-volume environment with accuracy and discretion. High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information. A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field and three to five years of relevant payroll experience are required. Compensation range $72,800–77,259 (35 hrs/week) with comprehensive benefits.
