Our client is a growing, dynamic organization in the Carson area seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead and oversee in-house payroll operations for a large, complex workforce. This is a hands-on leadership role for a detail-oriented payroll professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and brings deep expertise in payroll compliance, union payroll, and multi-state operations. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership capabilities, a commitment to accuracy, and the ability to partner cross-functionally while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee and manage in-house payroll processing for 800+ employees, including union and non-union staff
Supervise weekly and bi-weekly payroll cycles, ensuring accuracy of wages, benefits, garnishments, and tax deductions
Ensure compliance with multi-state payroll tax laws, wage and hour regulations, and union labor agreements
Reconcile payroll tax submissions and manage quarterly and annual filings, including W-2s
Prepare payroll documentation and reports for audits, workers’ compensation reviews, and union contract requirements
Serve as the primary escalation point for payroll inquiries and discrepancy resolution
Partner with HR, Finance, and Operations to support payroll-related initiatives
Identify and implement process improvements to streamline payroll operations and increase efficiency
Maintain and update payroll systems in alignment with current regulations and company policies
Train, mentor, and develop payroll staff to support operational excellence and team growth
Requirements:
5+ years of in-house payroll experience, including leadership or supervisory responsibilities
Proven experience managing payroll for large employee populations (1,000+ employees)
Strong knowledge of union payroll, multi-state payroll compliance, and wage & hour laws
Experience with payroll tax filings, audits, and regulatory reporting
High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality
Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Payroll certification (CPP or FPC) preferred
Minimum of 5 years of experience in full-cycle payroll management, including multi-state payroll
Proficiency in using ADP Workforce Now for payroll processing and reporting
Demonstrated ability to manage payroll for over 500 employees, including unionized staff
Comprehensive knowledge of payroll laws and regulations, including tax compliance and labor agreements
Strong organizational and analytical skills to handle complex payroll tasks and reporting
Ability to oversee bi-weekly and weekly payroll cycles with high accuracy
Excellent communication skills to coordinate with internal teams and external auditors
Proven experience in preparing documentation for audits and handling union-specific payroll requirements
