Job Description

A nonprofit school is seeking a Payroll Manager with some Staff Accountant responsibilities. This role partners with the Controller, HR, and CFOO to ensure accurate payroll and support key accounting functions.

Job Responsibility

  • Own full-cycle payroll (timecards, taxes, benefits, 403b, garnishments)
  • Ensure compliance with CA/federal payroll laws
  • Reconcile payroll, benefits, and retirement contributions
  • Prepare payroll JE’s and support month-end close
  • Assist with audits, reporting, and accounting projects
  • Act as main point of contact for payroll inquiries

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Accounting/Finance or similar
  • 5+ years accounting + 2–3+ years payroll
  • Strong payroll compliance knowledge
  • Paylocity strongly preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
  • At least 5 years of accounting experience, with prior exposure to nonprofit environments considered a plus
  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of hands-on payroll administration experience, including ownership of full-cycle payroll activities
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-state, semi-monthly payroll for large employee populations, including environments with more than 500 employees
  • Working knowledge of payroll compliance, tax reporting, garnishments, employee benefit deductions, and payroll account reconciliations
  • Experience preparing journal entries, supporting financial statement preparation, and reconciling payroll-related accounts within the general ledger
  • Proficiency with payroll systems such as Paylocity, along with strong comfort using business and collaboration software
  • Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with employees, leadership, auditors, and external vendors
