A nonprofit school is seeking a Payroll Manager with some Staff Accountant responsibilities. This role partners with the Controller, HR, and CFOO to ensure accurate payroll and support key accounting functions.
Job Responsibility
Own full-cycle payroll (timecards, taxes, benefits, 403b, garnishments)
Ensure compliance with CA/federal payroll laws
Reconcile payroll, benefits, and retirement contributions
Prepare payroll JE’s and support month-end close
Assist with audits, reporting, and accounting projects
Act as main point of contact for payroll inquiries
Requirements
Bachelor's in Accounting/Finance or similar
5+ years accounting + 2–3+ years payroll
Strong payroll compliance knowledge
Paylocity strongly preferred
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
At least 5 years of accounting experience, with prior exposure to nonprofit environments considered a plus
Minimum of 2 to 3 years of hands-on payroll administration experience, including ownership of full-cycle payroll activities
Demonstrated ability to manage multi-state, semi-monthly payroll for large employee populations, including environments with more than 500 employees
Working knowledge of payroll compliance, tax reporting, garnishments, employee benefit deductions, and payroll account reconciliations
Experience preparing journal entries, supporting financial statement preparation, and reconciling payroll-related accounts within the general ledger
Proficiency with payroll systems such as Paylocity, along with strong comfort using business and collaboration software
Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with employees, leadership, auditors, and external vendors
