Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Payroll Manager/Director to join a small team for a contract assignment expected to last approximately four weeks. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented payroll specialist who can evaluate current workflows, build practical payroll procedures, and support the rollout of an updated timekeeping approach. The successful candidate will bring strong operational knowledge, a hands-on leadership style, and the ability to guide employees through process adoption and training.

Job Responsibility

  • Assess existing payroll operations and develop streamlined procedures that improve accuracy, consistency, and efficiency
  • Lead the design and rollout of revised payroll processes that align with business needs and support day-to-day execution
  • Support implementation of the timeclock solution, including setup coordination, workflow alignment, and user readiness
  • Deliver training and practical guidance to managers and staff on updated payroll and timekeeping procedures
  • Oversee full-cycle payroll activities and ensure timely, accurate processing across a multi-state workforce
  • Manage payroll administration for a workforce of more than 500 employees while maintaining compliance with company policy and applicable regulations
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to document payroll policies, establish controls, and address operational issues during implementation
  • Provide subject matter expertise in payroll management tools to support process design and ongoing usability

Requirements

  • 7+ years of payroll experience, including leadership responsibility for end-to-end payroll operations
  • Demonstrated expertise in full-cycle payroll processing within multi-state environments
  • Experience managing payroll for employee populations of 500 or more
  • Strong background in payroll process design, policy development, and procedural documentation
  • Ability to train teams effectively and support adoption of new payroll and timekeeping practices
  • Hands-on experience with payroll platforms such as UKG Pro

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with timekeeping systems
  • exposure to Synel is preferred
  • Prior experience working with small-company environments and local availability near McLean, Virginia is preferred
