We are looking for a detail-oriented Payroll Clerk to join a well-established company in Bakersfield, California. This position supports day-to-day payroll and accounts payable operations while contributing to administrative, accounting, HR, and safety-related activities. The ideal candidate is organized, accurate, and comfortable managing time-sensitive financial tasks in a fast-paced office environment.
Job Responsibility
Process payroll for 40 or more employees by reviewing time records, calculating earnings, and entering payroll data accurately and on schedule
Prepare payroll tax payments, complete required tax filings, and maintain compliance with applicable reporting deadlines
Produce certified payroll documentation and labor compliance records for projects that require prevailing wage reporting
Enter vendor invoices and company card activity into the accounting system with a high level of accuracy
Issue vendor payments, generate checks, and record disbursements to keep accounts payable current
Reconcile supplier statements and credit card accounts each month to identify and resolve discrepancies promptly
Coordinate renewals for local business licenses and maintain related administrative records
Partner with the Safety Coordinator to support onboarding activities, including orientation administration for new team members
Provide additional accounting and office support to the Controller and assist with front desk coverage when needed
Requirements
At least 3 years of experience in payroll, accounts payable, or a closely related accounting support role
Working knowledge of full-cycle payroll processing, including payroll taxes, garnishments, and employee timekeeping review
Experience handling accounts payable functions such as invoice entry, payment processing, and statement reconciliation
Familiarity with prevailing wage requirements, public works reporting, or certified payroll preparation is preferred
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook for daily administrative and financial tasks
Understanding of standard accounting principles and the ability to work accurately with detailed financial information
Experience with Sage 100 Contractor is beneficial, though training may be provided for a strong candidate
Nice to have
Familiarity with prevailing wage requirements, public works reporting, or certified payroll preparation
