Job Description

We are seeking a Mid-Level Patent & Trade Secret Counsel to support patent prosecution, portfolio management, and trade secret strategy for industrial, aerospace, clean energy, automotive, and life sciences clients. This role is ideal for attorneys with hands-on experience supporting engineering- and R&D-driven organizations and who can operate across a variety of utilization models.

Job Responsibility

  • Manage and support patent prosecution and global portfolio strategy across industrial, aerospace, automotive, clean energy, and life sciences technologies
  • Lead or support trade secret protection programs, including confidentiality strategies, internal policies, and enforcement considerations
  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate (FTO), and landscape analyses to support product development and commercialization
  • Draft, review, and negotiate IP assignments, confidentiality agreements, collaboration agreements, and technology licenses
  • Partner closely with R&D, engineering, product development, and scientific teams to align IP strategy with innovation and business goals
  • Support cross-border and multi-jurisdictional patent and trade secret matters
  • Assist with IP due diligence for M&A, partnerships, and strategic collaborations
  • Provide flexible support across full-time, part-time, and project-based engagements as needed

Requirements

  • JD or equivalent with active U.S. bar membership in good standing
  • 5–15 years of experience in patent prosecution, trade secret protection, or IP portfolio management
  • Substantive experience supporting industrial, aerospace, automotive, clean energy, or life sciences organizations
  • Strong drafting, analytical, and issue-spotting skills with the ability to work independently
  • Experience collaborating with technical and scientific stakeholders in fast-paced, innovation-driven environments

Nice to have

  • Prior experience supporting or working at companies such as: Aerospace / Industrial: Boeing, GE, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell
  • Life Sciences / Medical Device / Pharma: Danaher, Thermo Fisher, Astellas, AbbVie, Abbott
  • Biotech: Gilead, Regeneron
  • Experience with life sciences, biotech, or medical device patent portfolios, including coordination with scientists and inventors
  • Familiarity with IP enforcement, licensing, and commercialization agreements

  • Provide practical legal advice on a wide range of IP matters for data science, engineering, and business teams, including licensing issues tied to product development, tooling, and infrastructure, and issues relating to actual and potential disclosure of IP in external communications
  • Draft, review, and negotiate IP-related terms in commercial and intercompany agreements
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to identify repeatable IP issues and help build templates, guidance, and escalation paths that enable faster, more consistent decision-making
  • Support the open source program by providing legal review and pragmatic guidance on licensing, compliance, and contribution practices (inbound use and outbound releases)
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., Engineering, Security, Infrastructure, Tech Brand) to improve open source policies and “policy-to-practice” workflows (intake, approvals, documentation, and training)
