To deliver patent and design services across engineering and technology driven sectors. This role is ideal for a newly qualified or nearly qualified Patent Attorney with an engineering (preferred) or physics (considered) background. Exceptional early career candidates who are already well trained in a patent environment will also be considered. You will join a team recognised for helping clients navigate complex IP landscapes, including advising on both registered and unregistered rights, and providing strategic IP planning.
Job Responsibility:
Drafting patent specifications and design applications, particularly in engineering and technology fields
Preparing responses to official actions
Managing UK, European and international prosecution for defined matters and co-ordinating with partners and foreign associates as necessary
Responding to client enquiries as appropriate
Providing clear, commercially focused advice on protectability, freedom to operate, and infringement
Helping clients understand what types of IP they hold, where protection may be available, and how best to secure it
Guiding clients on confidentiality considerations, including when NDAs or early patent filings are required to avoid losing rights
Conducting detailed reviews of client and third-party IP
Reviewing prior art and collaborating closely with clients and partners to create compelling arguments in response to patent office objections
Investigating and advising on the status, breadth and enforceability of third-party intellectual property rights
Assisting in contentious matters
Supporting clients in building effective and commercially relevant patent portfolios
Monitoring competitor activity and developments in relevant technologies
Assisting with IP aspects of commercial transactions where appropriate
Preparing IP budgets for selected clients
Working collaboratively within the IP team and across the wider firm to provide well-rounded client support
Sharing technical insights and contribute to team learning and best practice discussions
Assisting in business development by generating case studies or commentaries
Building trusted, long-term relationships through professional and responsive service
Identifying opportunities to add value and contribute to the team’s continued growth and reputation for commercially appropriate IP advice
Requirements:
Newly qualified or nearly qualified UK/EU Patent Attorney
Degree in engineering (strongly preferred) or physics (considered)
Strong analytical skills and ability to understand complex technical subject matter
Clear, concise communicator capable of explaining technical and legal concepts to clients
Organised, proactive and able to manage deadlines independently
A collaborative team player with a client-centred approach
Exceptional early career candidates with strong “housetrained” foundations will be considered
