Job Responsibility

  • Build and direct the firm’s California state and local tax practice, shaping market strategy, elevating visibility, and driving long-term growth in California.
  • Advise individuals and businesses on intricate state and local tax matters, including residency and domicile analysis, sourcing questions, and planning approaches supported by clear documentation.
  • Guide clients through tax planning tied to relocations, major liquidity events, remote work arrangements, and departures from California.
  • Counsel multistate businesses on issues such as nexus, income allocation, combined reporting, withholding obligations, and related compliance considerations.
  • Represent clients in tax examinations, administrative disputes, appeals, and court proceedings involving state and local taxing authorities.
  • Expand relationships with referral partners, financial professionals, family offices, and institutional stakeholders to generate new client opportunities.
  • Partner with attorneys across tax, private client, corporate, and real estate teams to deliver coordinated legal strategies and broaden client service offerings.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop associates and counsel, fostering strong performance, client service excellence, and practice depth.

Requirements

  • Licensed attorney with significant experience handling state and local tax planning, compliance matters, controversy work, and litigation.
  • Strong command of California tax law and broader multistate tax concepts relevant to individuals, businesses, and cross-jurisdictional matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage numerous active matters and meet deadlines in a demanding legal environment.
  • Established leadership skills with a track record of advancing client relationships, developing teams, and growing a legal practice.
  • Portable book of business and the ability to bring an existing client portfolio related to state and local tax matters.
  • Experience with tax audits, motion practice, briefing, discovery, and other litigation-related responsibilities.
  • Background advising on tax planning strategies involving state and local tax exposure, controversy risk, and business or personal transitions.
