An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine with a key focus on Cystic Fibrosis (CF) services in the East of England. The successful candidate will join a well-established tertiary children's respiratory unit and play a major role in supporting regional respiratory and CF services. Applicants with 1 year of NHS experience are encouraged to apply. The role combines specialist respiratory and cystic fibrosis work with some acute/general paediatric responsibilities, depending on service requirements and job planning agreement.
Job Responsibility
Provide Consultant-led inpatient and outpatient care for children with respiratory disorders
Manage a broad spectrum of paediatric respiratory conditions
Participate in regular respiratory outpatient clinics and specialist MDT clinics
Conduct inpatient respiratory consultations and twice-weekly ward rounds
Review investigations and provide expert clinical advice to multidisciplinary colleagues
Support the development of respiratory physiology and sleep study services
Participate in regional MDT services for difficult asthma
Deliver specialist care for children with cystic fibrosis within a recognised regional centre
Participate in weekly multidisciplinary CF clinics and transition clinics with adult services
Manage new diagnoses, family counselling, inpatient reviews, annual reviews, and long-term follow-up
Support home spirometry, CFTR modulator therapy pathways, and specialist MDT care
Lead or contribute to the development of the CF service in line with national standards
Support acute paediatric services, children's assessment units, or consultant-of-the-week rotas
Provide senior decision-making for acutely unwell children
Teach undergraduate medical students, postgraduate trainees, nursing staff, and allied health professionals
Supervise trainees and speciality doctors
Participate in audit, research, governance, guideline development, and quality improvement projects
Maintain safeguarding competencies and CPD requirements
Requirements
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
MRCPCH or equivalent
Entry on GMC Specialist Register in Paediatrics, or within 6 months of CCT/equivalent
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Demonstrable commitment to Paediatric Respiratory Medicine
At least 2 years of respiratory training or tertiary centre experience
Competence in managing respiratory inpatients and outpatients
Experience managing children with Cystic Fibrosis
Level 3 safeguarding training
EPLS or APLS certification
Nice to have
Higher degree (MD / MSc / PhD)
CCT or recognised advanced training in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine
Previous Consultant-level experience
Expertise in CFTR modulator therapy
Sleep studies / paediatric sleep medicine experience
