Job Description

Sugar Australia has an exciting opportunity for a Packing Operator to join our team in a permanent full-time role at our Mackay Port Packing facility. Reporting to the Production Manager, you'll be a key member of our production team, responsible for ensuring efficient operation across packing, warehouse and despatch areas, while also providing maintenance support as required. This is primarily an operator focused role, where you'll be hands-on with packaging machinery and daily production activities. Your electrical trade skills will be called on for responding to equipment breakdowns, supporting our annual shutdown (2 weeks/year), performing routine maintenance, and assisting with occasional small scale electrical projects. You'll also benefit from a balanced lifestyle with our 6-week rotating 12-hour roster.

Job Responsibility

  • Operating packaging and bagging machines efficiently
  • Performing warehouse and despatch duties
  • Providing maintenance support for packaging and palletising equipment
  • Troubleshooting and repairing machine and equipment faults
  • Performing ship loading duties, including connection, disconnection, and Citec control loading
  • Supporting maintenance for sugar receivable, transport, and storage equipment
  • Ensuring compliance with safety initiatives and PPE requirements
  • Participating in task analysis and safety walks
  • Completing shift logs, pack sheets, and data entry on MES
  • Liaising with truck drivers, sugar supply trucks, and refinery personnel
  • Escalating customer issues and conducting necessary checks
  • Working as part of a team and unsupervised when required
  • Supporting the training and mentoring of Level 1 & 2 Operators

Requirements

  • Trade qualified Electrician with a current QLD Electrical Work Licence
  • Experience working in an industrial or operating environment
  • Previous experience operating plant equipment, ideally in packaging or manufacturing
  • Hazardous area training (or willingness to obtain)
  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills across electrical and mechanical systems
  • Solid understanding of machinery, control systems, and computer-based operation
  • Knowledge of Workplace Health & Safety requirements
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Highly motivated with strong problem-solving and conceptual thinking abilities
  • Willingness to work shift work and mentor Level 1 & 2 Operators

  • Utilize expertise in battery manufacturing processes (e.g., electrode coating, calendering, winding/stacking, electrolyte filling, formation, aging, pack assembly, welding, BMS integration, safety testing) to assess supplier capabilities, resolve capacity constraints, and validate cost dependencies
  • Apply analytical problem-solving to SPOR (Supplier Plan of Record) decisions and complex supply chain issues related to battery sourcing, including multi-source strategies and cell qualification trade-offs
  • Lead negotiations for purchase agreements, NRE, capacity reservation, and long-term supply contracts to secure optimal terms and ensure supplier accountability for program deliverables across the battery supply base
