The Overhead Utilities Technical Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and assessing technical training programs for overhead telecommunications construction. This role ensures that new and existing field technicians possess the technical knowledge, practical skills, and safety discipline required to safely construct, install, maintain, and repair overhead telecommunications infrastructure. This position requires strong hands-on aerial field experience and prior experience training or mentoring technicians in working at heights and potentially energized environments. The Trainer works across multiple operating locations and collaborates closely with field leadership to support technician development and reinforce safe work practices.
Job Responsibility:
Deliver classroom and hands on training for overhead utility construction and pole climbing
Instruct on climbing techniques, work positioning, ascent and descent, and tool handling aloft
Instruct on Bucket Truck operations and Digger Derrick operations related to overhead construction
Demonstrate proper inspection, use, and care of climbing and fall protection equipment
Teach safe approach distances, minimum clearances, and work practices around overhead lines
Instruct crews on recognizing electrical hazards associated with overhead utilities
Reinforce awareness of energized and potentially energized conductors
Reinforce OSHA regulations and company safety standards related to overhead construction
Integrate electrical hazard considerations into job planning and work sequencing
Emphasize proper grounding, cover up, and situational awareness during overhead work
Support development and delivery of overhead, climbing, and working at heights curricula
Ensure training materials reflect current field practices and company standards
Deliver onboarding, refresher, and advancement training for overhead crews and climbers
Evaluate trainee competency through practical climbing and working at heights assessments
Assess understanding of electrical hazard awareness during field exercises
Coordinate with operations and training leadership to align training delivery with field needs
Recommend updates to training content based on field feedback and observed trends
Participate in instructor development and technical standard updates
Maintain accurate training rosters, evaluations, and related documentation
Support compliance with company training requirements and applicable standards
Assist with audits or reviews related to overhead, climbing, and electrical awareness training
Requirements:
Minimum of 8 years of experience in overhead utility construction
Proven pole climbing experience with fall protection and working at heights training experience
Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
Experience installing overhead utility equipment, Poles, and placing/pulling stand
Familiarity with municipal standards and inspection requirements
Ability to instruct adult learners in classroom and field environments
Ability to maintain classroom structure and control
Strong communication and coordination skills
Basic computer skills for documentation and reporting
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently
Nice to have:
Prior lineman experience strongly preferred
Class A CDL preferred
Coursework or experience in adult learning or workforce development
Completion of an accredited lineman school or formal lineman apprenticeship preferred
Previous experience providing technical instruction or mentoring
Competent climber or similar qualification preferred
