The OSP Designer is responsible for planning and designing the external telecommunications infrastructure that supports fiber optic, copper, and coaxial network builds. This includes creating route designs, developing detailed construction drawings, conducting site surveys, and ensuring all outside plant elements comply with engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications. The role requires technical expertise, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to building reliable, high‑quality network infrastructure.
Job Responsibility:
Perform pole loading analysis to make recommendations to the responsible Professional Engineer
Review permit plans ensuring plans match the modeling
Perform peer reviews on pole modeling in various programs
Read and interpret fibre network design drawings, and outside plant records (data, maps)
Collaborate with other divisional teams to overcome project challenges and provide optimal solutions
Field Survey / Data Collection (out of province rotational travel schedule as needed)
Requirements:
Willingness to travel
Work a minimum of 40 hours per week
Valid driver’s license and reasonable driver’s abstract
Detailed knowledge of some of the following programs: SPIDA Calc, Quick Pole, O-CALC, PLS-CADD, Auto-CAD, QGIS
Great computer skills and ability to learn new software with ease
Detail-oriented with good organizational and time-management skills
Must be able to prioritize as needed, in a deadline-driven environment
Highly analytical and proven problem-solving abilities
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
General understanding of construction documents, drawings, and specifications
The successful candidate will be required to pass a criminal record check
The successful candidate must be authorized to work in Canada
Valid Drivers License (Class 5)
Reasonable Drivers Abstract
Must have flexibility to travel to work on rotational basis as needed
1–3 years of experience interpreting technical drawings, creating design documentation, or planning physical infrastructure in any engineering discipline
Nice to have:
Knowledge of current construction practices is considered an asset
Knowledge of Fibre Optic Network Infrastructure is considered an asset
Experience with telecom or fibre design is an advantage but not required
