General Summary The Pharmacy Technician, Outpatient Pharmacy is responsible for providing pharmacy services including performing prescription intake tasks, resolving insurance claims issues, preparing medications for dispensing, managing inventory, providing excellent customer service to patients, families, and providers, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and hospital policies. The Pharmacy Technician, Outpatient Pharmacy works under the direct supervision of a pharmacist to deliver safe, accurate, and reliable pharmacy services. Pharmacy Technician must be able to work a flexible schedule includeing some evenings and weekends.

Job Responsibility:

  • Customer Service & Patient Care: Promptly greets patients and families in person and by telephone with a friendly and helpful attitude. Answers medication-related inquiries, requests authorization for refills, and provides guidance on prescription pick-up. Responds efficiently to inquiries by health care providers with pharmacy questions
  • Prescription Processing: Receives and processes prescription orders, and continually updates patient information verifying accuracy. Manages the administrative responsibilities for faxing, filing, and/or documenting in medical record for non-electronic prescriptions, MassPAT PMP requirements, 340B eligibility, or other pertinent procedures. Ensures compliance with all regulations
  • Insurance & Billing Support: Determines and updates patient’s insurance information, calls insurance companies to verify coverage, processes claims through the patient’s insurance. Investigates and resolves prescription issues. Collaborates with the pharmacist and prescribers to formulate a solution, such as an alternative medicine or co-pay discount program
  • Medication Preparation: Measures and counts medications and prepares and affixes medication labels for dispensing under pharmacist supervision. Compounds simple or complex non-sterile medications in accordance with established policies, procedures and professional standards
  • Inventory Management: Maintains pharmacy inventory by monitoring medication and supplies stock levels, anticipating needed medications and supplies, and removing outdated/expired drugs. Places and expedites orders, receives orders, rotates medications, restocks supplies. Ensures the proper storage of all medications in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Compliance: Complies with all federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations to ensure a safe, accurate, and compliant dispensing environment. Performs routine quality control, cleaning and equipment maintenance tasks according to established procedures and schedules. Prepares and maintains related logs and records.Adheres to all privacy, infection-control, and annual competency requirements in accordance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.. Participates in training and orientation of new technicians and pharmacy students

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Current registration as a pharmacy technician by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy
  • Current national certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
