An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Consultant in Orthodontics to join a progressive healthcare organisation in Scotland. This Consultant-led post is primarily hospital-based, with occasional outreach commitments to a peripheral community clinic. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive diagnostic, advisory, and treatment-planning services for patients referred to the Orthodontic Department, with a strong focus on complex, multidisciplinary cases, including Dentofacial/Craniofacial anomalies, Orthognathic pathways, and Hypodontia management. The appointed Consultant will also contribute to the leadership of the regional Managed Clinical Network (MCN) in Orthodontics and support training-grade staff within the department. Candidates with 1 year of NHS experience are encouraged to apply.
Job Responsibility
Deliver Consultant-led orthodontic care for referred adult and paediatric patients
Provide specialist diagnostic and advisory clinics for complex orthodontic cases
Lead interdisciplinary management of Dentofacial / Craniofacial conditions
Manage and coordinate Hypodontia treatment pathways with colleagues in restorative and oral surgery
Participate in weekly multidisciplinary Orthognathic / Craniofacial clinics
Plan orthodontic treatment for cases requiring dento-alveolar surgery
Work jointly with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery consultants in shared clinics
Support cleft-related orthodontic pathways in liaison with tertiary specialist teams
Triage suitable cases to training-grade staff and provide clinical supervision
Contribute to the effective operational management of the Orthodontic Department
Participate in audit, governance, quality improvement and service development
Support undergraduate, postgraduate and junior staff teaching activities
Contribute to the leadership of the regional Managed Clinical Network in Orthodontics
Requirements
Primary Dental / Medical Qualification (BDS / equivalent)
Full GMC / GDC registration with Licence to Practise where applicable
Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Orthodontics, or eligible within 6 months
MOrth RCS or equivalent specialist qualification
ISFE / FDSRCS in Orthodontics or equivalent
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Recognised as a higher orthodontic specialist training
