Optical / Laser Communication System Engineer – Italy (Hybrid) Full-Time, Permanent NewSpace Technical is partnered with an innovative European engineering company at the forefront of optical and laser-based technologies for space and ground applications. As part of their continued growth, we are looking for a Laser Communication System Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team working on cutting-edge optical systems for both terrestrial and space environments. The Role As a Lasercomm System Engineer, you will contribute to the design and development of advanced optical ground systems and laser communication technologies, supporting projects from early concept through to testing and validation. Key responsibilities include: Leading system-level activities for optical ground stations and laser communication systems Defining system architecture, sizing, and performance budgets Managing subsystem requirements and interface definitions Performing analysis, modelling, and simulation of optical systems Defining verification and validation strategies Supporting integration, verification, and experimental testing (lab and field) Producing high-quality technical documentation Coordinating subcontractors and overseeing technical delivery Acting as a technical interface with customers and stakeholders Your Background Master's degree or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related field ~3+ years of experience in optical systems, particularly within laser communications or photonics Strong team player with a proactive and detail-oriented mindset Comfortable working across multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electronics, operations) Good communication skills in English Key Skills & Experience Hands-on experience in at least one of the following: Free-space optical satellite communications Satellite laser ranging Laser beam propagation Laser physics and photonics Experience with system-level design and performance analysis Proficiency with MATLAB, Python, or Octave Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities Ability to contribute across the full system lifecycle Desirable Experience Knowledge of adaptive optics and wavefront sensing Experience in optical detection and communication systems Familiarity with pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems Experience with optical design/simulation tools (e.g. Zemax) Familiarity with requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS) Experience working with external partners or subcontractors Why Apply?
