The Optical Engineer is a multifaceted role working with the engineering team to implement and test visible and SWIR optics-based system components and test systems for Redwire’s Star Tracker and Camera systems. You will be directly involved in the implementation of optical systems for space-based applications as well as the specification, design, and implementation of tests for said systems. This work will include interacting with high performance lenses, stray-light baffling systems, and custom test facilities for Redwire star trackers and camera applications. Test involves both the qualification and acceptance test needs to ensure the design meets specifications and manufacturing performance metrics.
Job Responsibility:
Collaborate with multidisciplinary team on research and development of Redwire’s optics, camera, and baffle systems
Set up and run tests to verify the performance of optical system
Validate test concepts for Redwire’s developed optical solutions
Work with verification and manufacturing test teams to turn concepts into working systems
Use a first-principles approach to interpret and analyze physical systems
Directly interface with customers to present and defend our optics solutions and their performance in meeting mission requirements
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 2 or more years of experience or a Master’s Degree and 0-2 years of experience in Physics or related field
Strong background in mathematics and physics as it pertains to light and refraction
Experience in design, engineering, and testing for engineering/physics applications
Hands-on experience with optical benches and hardware including alignment of lenses, mirrors, and lasers
Familiarity with imaging performance metrics such as MTF (Modulation transfer function), distortion, stray light, point spread function or aberration
Experience with data processing and communication of findings
Some limited travel may be required
Nice to have:
Understanding of advanced mathematics and its application in radiometric and optical systems
Understanding of the design and application of camera optics
Understanding of the principles around stray light rejection with baffle systems
Experience using interferometers, wavefront sensors, and spectrometers
Experience with Zemax or other optical modeling and simulation software
Experienced with Matlab or Python to automate repetitive testing and data analysis
Strong communication and writing skills
What we offer:
Highly competitive benefits package
Commitment to core values of Integrity, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, and Excellence
